Unable to launch a Nuance Desktop Application

Products: Dragon NaturallySpeaking 9, 10; OmniPage 15, 16, 17; PaperPort 11, 12; PDF Converter Professional 4, 5, 6; PDF Converter 4, 5, 6; PDF Create 4, 5, 6

Problem:

When trying to launch a Nuance Desktop application such as Dragon NaturallySpeaking, OmniPage, PaperPort or PDF Converter on Windows XP or Vista, the following error message may be displayed:

"[Product] has stopped working".

"[Product] MV Extension has stopped working".

Cause:

Windows Data Execution Prevention may block Nuance applications from opening properly.

Solution:

Please use the following steps to disable Data Execution Prevention (DEP) in order to launch the Nuance product:

  1. Click on the Windows Start Menu, then open the Control Panel.
  2. Click "Classic View" on the left if it is not already enabled.
  3. Double-click "System". On Windows Vista, click on "Advanced System Settings" in the "System" window.
  4. On the "System Properties" dialog box, click on the "Advanced" tab.
  5. Click the "Settings" button in the "Performance" section.
  6. Click the "Data Execution Prevention" tab.
  7. Click on "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only".
  8. Click "OK" to apply the changes, then reboot the system.
  9. Launch the product.
